One of the legal tech companies we’re excited to talk about is Pro Bono Net, a company that provides a host of digital tools for legal organizations around the country to help them coordinate pro bono cases. There are millions of Americans struggling with legal issues and unable to afford a lawyer, and this organization aims to address that issue with programs and technology.

Here’s more about what makes this company so great.

Pro Bono Net history

Pro Bono Net has been around for a while, ever since the dawn of the internet. The tech company was created in 1999 in New York by two attorneys working on pro bono cases. They created the first version of the website that year to help pro bono lawyers have access to technology to help them with their cases and promote pro bono in the legal community of New York.

Pro Bono Net helps those in need get legal help, whether for family, housing, or other common civil justice issues. The company helps develop initiatives for communities that are most vulnerable so that access to an attorney is available to more people in need. Priorities include justice for older Americans and immigration justice.

The programs provided by Pro Bono Net have been adopted across 40 states and territories thus far. The organization partners with civil and legal organizations, immigrants rights groups, law firms, and many others in their initiatives.

Pro Bono Net founders

Executive director Mark O’Brien is co-founder of Pro Bono Net. He is a Senior Fellow of Georgetown University Law Center’s Institute for Technology Law & Policy and co-teaches a course on Technology, Innovation, and Law Practice Practicum. He was named one of Fastcase’s 50 in 2012 for all that he’s done for legal tech.

Co-founder Michael Hertz serves on the board for the company and now is the Chief Marketing Officer at White & Case, a global law firm.
