Autumn has arrived, and that means that the days are getting shorter, and it’s getting colder out there. Because the excitement of summer has ended, and often the relaxation that comes with it, fall can be a hard time to readjust to the grind. This is why focusing on your physical and mental health is a must for lawyers. Check out these simple ways to beat the winter blues and keep your mind and body healthy and happy!

Give Back

Volunteering in your community is a great way to do some good for both others and yourself. And, it doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Get your team involved by helping out as a team at your local food pantry, hospital, or nonprofit. Not only will you enjoy the feeling of giving back, but you’ll also be able to take advantage of some great team bonding time.

Get Outside

When it’s cold outside and the days are short, it can be easy to hibernate at home. And, it’s even easier during these chilly months to only connect with others through social media or your phone. Instead, put down the phone and do something outside. Enjoy nature by exercising outdoors, taking a walk around the pumpkin patch, or going apple picking. You may have to bundle up, but it will be better for your soul to get outside more often all year round.

Start a New Book

When you do find yourself at home, try starting a new book that’s been on your list but that you just haven’t had time to dive into. There’s nothing cozier than having a cup of tea and reading, morning or night, so take some time to just relax and become engrossed in a story.

Eat Seasonal Foods

A great way to enjoy autumn is to take advantage of foods that are in season. Pumpkins are of course everywhere right now, but squash is another healthy food to eat in fall. Beets are another delicious fall food that provides lots of nutrients, including vitamin C, folate, and fiber, and they're delicious. These in-season foods will give you extra health benefits so you can better fight the winter cold!

Tea is also great to pair with meals or enjoy on its own. Many types of tea even have health benefits, including antioxidants, less caffeine than coffee, help with weight loss, and prevention of heart attack and stroke.

Take Time for Yourself

As a lawyer, fall is one of your busiest times of the year. It’s easy to work more hours than normal and wear yourself out. But even while your practice picks up, don’t forget to continue taking breaks from work and doing things just for yourself. Plan an activity that’s purely for enjoyment or self-care. You need time to rest, otherwise, you’ll start to experience burnout and exhaustion.

Fall is a beautiful season filled with pumpkin spice and leaf-peeping. But it can be extra busy and thus take a toll on lawyers’ physical and mental health. Remember to take care of yourself and stay invigorated with these tips.
